Congratulations Chattan for 1st place!

Big congratulations to Chattan Haselden for is 1st place poster presentation at the 2026 Enviroday poster session!

His poster title:

Hazardous concentrations of anthropogenic arsenic, cadmium, and lead in road
dust across seven eastern U.S. cities

Chattan T. Haselden, Minh T. Truong, Justin B. Richardson

His abstract:

Urban road dust (URD) hinders toxic metal pollution and is understudied in emergent
mid-size cities. These metals include arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb), which
are established carcinogens and are associated with multiple adverse health outcomes. Exposure to URD constitutes an environmental justice issue, disproportionately affecting lower-income and marginalized communities through higher traffic burdens, aging infrastructure, and legacies of industrial activity often amplifying existing health inequities. In this study, we assessed As, Cd, and Pb concentrations in URD and conducted a health risk assessment along eastern U.S. cities. These include Trenton, NJ (n=39); Wilmington, DE (n=32); Richmond, VA (n=61); Greensboro, NC (n=55); Raleigh, NC (n=50); Augusta, GA (n=45); and Charleston, SC (n=54). URD concentrations spanned 0.3–18 ppm for arsenic (As), 0.015–6.26 ppm for cadmium (Cd) and 1–457 ppm for lead (Pb). These concentration values were within the same range reported in conterminous U.S. but exceeded those previously reported in VA statewide.
